Meet the Indie Author: Interview with Serra Rose

Dark romance, dangerous vampires, supernatural worlds and characters who refuse to follow the rules. Welcome to the imagination of indie author Serra Rose.
Originally from New Zealand and now living in Melbourne, Australia, Serra Rose writes stories where seduction meets danger and the line between monsters and desire becomes dangerously blurred.
From vampire romances to the dark origins of the Grim Reaper, her books invite readers into supernatural worlds filled with unforgettable characters, complicated relationships and plenty of darkness.
As part of Oakheart Bookshop's mission to introduce independent fantasy and romantasy authors to readers in Denmark, we're delighted to welcome Serra Rose to our growing community.
In our first Meet the Indie Author interview, we discover where her passion for storytelling began, why vampires have fascinated her for decades, which of her characters demanded a book of his own, and what Danish readers can expect from her next.
Let's meet Serra Rose!

1. Let's start with an introduction. Who is Serra Rose beyond the books?
I'm from New Zealand, and live in Melbourne, Australia. When I'm not writing about vampires, wolf shifters or Grim Reapers, I'm working in a comms team in Digital Marketing.
2. What inspired you to become an author, and do you remember the moment you decided to write your first book?
My writing journey started when I was 12: I had to write a poem for homework and read it to the class. I had never done creative writing before and loved it. The poem "The old oak tree" got published in the school newsletter and it awakened a creativity in me in which I wrote several poems and then short stories. I knew then that I was going to be an author.
3. Your books explore vampires, supernatural worlds, and dark romance. What draws you to these themes?
I've been reading vampires since Mum brought home The Vampire Diaries books in 1992. I was held captive by the genre, and the obsession only grew. I like that they are dangerous monsters, who also seduce.
4. For readers discovering your books for the very first time, which book would you recommend starting with, and why?
If you're into vampires and paranormal romance, then start with Bloodsong. It has Damon Salvatore vibes with Phantom of the Opera. Start with that one, as it's the first in the series, and you won't be able to resist getting into the rest, they're addictive.
If vampires or romance isn't your thing, try The Shadow Within. It's the origin story of The Grim Reaper - a descent into darkness story, like Anakin becoming Darth Vader.
5. Your characters often find themselves caught between desire and danger. What makes a fictional romantic relationship truly captivating to you?
It's the seduction and danger.
6. Which character you've created holds a special place in your heart, and what makes them unforgettable to you?

Carlos. He was a side character in Bloodsong, stole all the scenes he was in, then demanded his own book.
That's where I learned how complex he is.
Plus he's my bi, polyamourus king.
7. Take us behind the scenes of your writing process. Are you a meticulous planner or someone who lets the characters take control of the story?
I am a pantser and my characters very much control the story. I create them, but they tell me who they are.
8. Being an independent author comes with both freedom and challenges. What has been the most rewarding part of your publishing journey, and what has been the hardest?

The most rewarding is meeting readers at events.
The hardest is going to those events, as I'm a massive introvert.
9. If you could invite your readers to spend one evening inside the world of one of your books, where would you take them, and which character would be their guide?
A little imagination for our fantasy-loving community!
Erik would be the guide. He'd take you to a vampire club and make you kneel before him simply by saying "submit to me."
10. Finally, your books are now finding their way to readers in Denmark through Oakheart Bookshop. What would you like to say to your new Danish readers, and what can they look forward to from you next?
Welcome to my worlds.
You're going to fall in love, and you're going to cry. If you need to message me to share your theories or your anger over characters, you can find me on social media.
I will share stories with you about writing these characters, and smile at your tears. My next books are the completion of the Bloodsong Series, and the next instalments in The Horsemen Chronicles.
My social media links are all under serrarosewrites.
